The Wonderful Benefits of Your Favourite Winter Warmers

With the weather hitting temperatures that have you reaching out for the heater, the traditional smoke and char of grills paired with refreshing salads and a cold glass of bubbly or white wine may be more summer than sultry.
However, El-Phoenician’s delectably abundant, yet simplified menu, is packed with fantastic dishes that can get you through the frosty months with a side of health benefits, too.

Lentils
One of our favourite wintery treats is a delicious glass of red, paired with a plate of heart-warming lentils.
Lentils, married up with authentic Middle Eastern Spices may be a treat for the taste buds but they also contain a myriad of benefits that can speed up your metabolism and keep your colon in check.
They are a good source of potassium, calcium, zinc, niacin and vitamin K, but are particularly rich in dietary fibre, lean protein, folate and iron.

Cauliflower
Dull and wilted cauliflower isn’t our game. Served with the acidic crunch of pickles and the smooth indulgence of tahini, our fried cauliflower is a hit with diners through the summer and winter months.
According to Dr Mercola, cauliflower contains sulforaphane, a sulphur compound that has also been shown to kill cancer stem cells, thereby slowing tumour growth. Some researchers believe eliminating cancer stem cells may be key to controlling cancer.

Red Wine
While the lucent, opaque shades of crisp whites have you day-dreaming about far away islands, a red smacks of smoke, fireplaces and chocolate – the perfect flavour for winter.
Medical Daily claims that red wine burns fat and lowers blood pressure, along with packing a big anti-oxidant punch that aids in fighting off free radicals

Eating Warm
Vegetables, that is.
The winter months can make it difficult to maintain nutrient levels due to a desire to eat warm. Sautéed, grilled and stewed vegetables can do the trick. Just ask your waiter for a plate of loubye, mixed grilled vegetables or, as a chef’s special, the kousa and keep your vitamin intake in balance.
